Saʽdeddīn Efendi (1536-1599)

Né en 1536, à Istanbul, au sein d’un milieu proche du pouvoir, Saʽdeddīn Efendi étudie auprès d’érudits ottomans reconnus et bénéficie ainsi d’une éducation de haut niveau. A l’âge de 20 ans, sous le règne du sultan Suleyman I (1494–1566), il entre au service du juge le plus réputé de l’histoire ottomane, le shaykh al-islām Ebusuʽud Efendi (1490–1574). Franchissant les échelons un à un, il est nommé professeur de l’un des meilleurs complexes éducatifs de l’époque, le Sahn-i seman fondé par Mehmed II. Sa carrière prend une tournure politique lorsqu’il devient précepteur du şehzade Murad, lequel devient sultan l’année suivante (r.1574–1595). Glanant le surnom de Hodja Efendi, il garde son poste sous Mehmed III (r.1595–1603). Durant cette période, il exerce une forte influence sur l’administration ottomane, si bien qu’aucune décision n’est prise sans qu’il soit consulté. En 1598, il est finalement nommé shaykh al-islām, la plus haute fonction religieuse du Devlet. Il trouve toutefois la mort l’année suivante, à Istanbul, où il est enterré dans le quartier Ayyūb Sultan.
